Anyone Remember Gene Autry?
And the old cowboy movies? Gene, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger and others with their pants tucked INSIDE their fancy western boots? Even The Duke, John Wayne, rolled his jeans up three to four inches on the shaft of his boots. I won't get into the additional insults of fringed shirts, double-creased hats, or chasing outlaws with Jeeps and horses. The Hollywood fantasy world!
That ain't the way it is sports fans. Check out this young rancher in town for a graduation event. He's really quite dressed up with the shirt and suspenders! Almost formal! But he's following cowboy "roolz", not Hollywood's. Those are horse-riding jeans - long enough not to ride up over his boots while in the saddle. The boots might be a bit dressy, but they appear to have leather soles which would be a safety feature for a horseman. They slip from the stirrup more easily than rubber ones. And the hat keeps the sun from his eyes and the rain off his back.
He's real, not some fringed fantasy. He's a surviving symbol of the real West, and I hope his way of life persists. By the way, when you get a chance, listen to Chris Ledoux's "Western Skies" for a more poetic version of what this young man is about.
