I came across this "creature" with a resemblance to a huge mantis in a forest near Chapel Hill, NC. As illustrated here, tree deaths can be structural wonders unto themselves, and a slow walk through a hardwood forest, especially during winter, reveals Nature's recycling activities with these creatures.
The lighting in this scene was tricky with quite a range between sunlit areas and shadows. The B&W conversion was done in Lightroom with the adjustment brush being used to (1) lighten the "mantis" and (2) darken the brightly-lit areas along with an overall drop in exposure to eliminate background distractions.
